Plants

  • Plants and algae are important to freshwater biomes because they provide oxygen through photosynthesis, and food for animals in this biome.
  • Floating leaves tend to be much broader, without major lobing, and remain flat on the water, taking advantage of full sun. Stomates are present for gas exchange, especially on the upper (adaxial) leaf surface www.botgard.ucla.edu/html/botanytextbooks/lifeforms/aquaticplants/fulltextonly
  • An important adaptation for many freshwater aquatic plants is the formation of aerenchyma, which is parenchyma tissue having large intercellular air spaces.
  • Submerged plants lack the exernal protective tissues required by land plants to limit water.

Animals
  • Most wetland fish are dark and drab looking with stripes of bands or mottling.
  • Plants and animals in freshwater regions are adjusted to the low salt content and would not be able to survive in areas of high salt concentration.
  • They usually obtain their food via tentacles which branch out into the flowing water and form a catchment area that can trap microscopic organisms (such as plankton) that is floating downstream.
  • Some fish in the freshwater have suckers to suck to the rocks so the don't go down the stream or lake.

  • Climate
  • There are to kind of Freshwater systems following water and still water (ponds, wetlands, rivers, streams).
  • The faster the follow of the water the more oxygen their is.
  • The flowing water is more clean then the standing water.
  • Standing water has more vegation on the outside edges because the water in not following.
